Jesus must have felt very alone on the cross. His friends had run away; the people who stood around the cross were cruel and unfriendly. Even the sun hid away for three hours, leaving the whole earth in deep darkness. His Father turned His face away from Him, causing Him to cry out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” What could have been worse than being abandoned during that time of terrible suffering when He needed just one person to be there for Him? He did that so that we would never be alone. (337)
